Text by Emily Dickinson
I don't often write vocal music. But when I do, I often turn to Emily Dickinson to supply the words. And she has never let me down. There is a yearning in her words that speaks to me. An irregular cadence that lends itself to a musical setting." In working with her poignant poem "Proof," I wanted to capture that yearning quality. The opening notes define the mood. The writer loves. Loves strongly. And she is willing to go to any length to prove her love.
That I did always love,
I bring thee proof:
That till I loved
I did not love enough.
That I shall love alway,
I offer thee
That love is life,
And life hath immortality.
This, dost thou doubt, sweet?
Then have I
Nothing to show
But Calvary.
